The team can now settle back after a fantastic season and take some well earned rest. However Jon has one final ‘big event’ in his programme, that being his wedding to fiancé Joanna Williams on 8th May! JonEley.net wishes Jo and Jon a very happy wedding day, and all the best for many years of happiness together. Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Eley!
April 19th 2010
All that was left was a small matter of the 2010 British Championships, which was as exciting as ever. Jon got off to a string start taking the 1500m and 500m titles. Ian Upcott then made a fantastic final to the season taking the 1000m title, with Anthony Douglas making a late surge to take the 3000m. This gave the overall Championship to Jon for the 4th time, Tom Iveson in 2nd, and Ian Upcott 3rd. Jon’s Mohawks club had a great competition, taking both the men’s and women’s title with Charlotte Gilmartin winning for the first time. They then capped it off by taking the relay championship in another close battle between Mohawks and Nottingham. Well done to all Mohawks from everyone at JonEley.net!
The British Championships marked one final career ending, that of Paul Worth. Paul is returning to university next year, and so has decided to retire from international competition. Paul was part of the 2008 World Championship medal winning team, along with the 2010 Olympic Team. However Paul’s outstanding career highlight will remain as being the only British skater in history to win the British Championships at every single age group, an amazing achievement! Paul will still be skating and competing for his Nottingham Club, so we look forward to still seeing him around!
March 29th 2010
The 2010 international season came to a conclusion in Bormio, Italy, at the World Team Championships. The fast ice conditions went down well with the team as Ian Upcott, Jack Whelbourne, Charlottle Gilmartin, and Alex Whelbourne all set great new PB’s. The Mens B-final event went down to yet another close battle with Germany in the relay. Unfortunately this time the Germans got some revenge for their Olympic defeat! The girls team faired better, finishing a creditable 6th place after entering into the event ranked 11th.
The end to the season also marked the end of another amazing career, that of Sarah Lindsay. Sarah stepped onto the ice for her final 500m in Bormio with a glittering career already in her pocket. Sarah has represented Team GB at 3 Olympic Games, won European Championship silver, and been the Ladies British Champion no less then 9 times! The icing to that incredible career came as Sarah stepped off the ice having broken her own 500m British Record! What a great way to call it a day, congratulations and good luck Sarah!
March 22th 2010
The World Championships in Sofia were a success for the GB team. Jon showed yet again how strong he is at the business end of the season with a 7th place in the 500m. Despite a fall, the relay equalled their 6th place position from the Olympic Games. However the highlight of the championships came in the womens 1000m with Elise Christie making it all the way to the final, where she narrowly missed a medal in 4th place. Congratulations on your first World Championship final Elise!
Sofia marked the final competition for Tom Iveson who stepped off the ice into international retirement. Tom has been representing GB for the past 10 years, topping his career off with a Bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships, and 6th place in the 2010 Olympic Games. JonEley.net would like to say congratulations to Tom for a fantastic career, and wish him the best of luck for his future after skating.
March 18th 2010
The competition starts tomorrow (Friday) with the 1500m. Just over a year ago Jon won the first of 2 World Cup silver medals here in Sofia, and he has settled straight back into this form throughout this weeks training. He will be looking to improve on his 6th place from Vancouver. Jon will be joined by Jack Whelbourne who has been selected for the second individual place. This is a great achievement for the 18 year old, and caps off a great year for the youngster.

March 8th 2010
Team GB arrived back from Vancouver tired, but happy with their Olympic campaign. They brought home two 6th place finishes with Jon in the 500m, and the 5000m relay. These results were the 3rd highest in Team GB over all the Olympic sports. Also a big well done to Elise finishing 11th in the 500m at her first Olympic Games.
The team were treated to a few days rest when they got home, allowing them to adjust back to reality after the circus of Vancouver. Then it was time to put in the last hard week of training for this season in preparation for the World Championships in Bulgaria. Coach Nicky pushed the team hard, and they flew out to Bulgaria in good shape to make an impact on the World Champs.
The men’s team also had some great news when a few days before leaving they received a late invite to the World Team Championships in Bormio, Italy. Then soon after that the women’s team were also invited! This is the first time GB has ever sent a full team to the World Team Championships.
JonEley.net is also very happy to announce that team physiotherapist Alison Thomson gave birth to a baby girl called Evie shortly after the Olympic Games. Both mother and baby are strong and healthy, so congratulations to Ali and Ben (dad) from the whole team. Ali would usually travel out to Sofia with the team, but has been replaced by her EIS colleague Simon Spencer. Simon is fitting in well with the team and is excited to experience his first short track competition.
January 28th 2010
Jon and the team head to Calgary. The Great Britain team flew to Calgary today for there final Olympic Preparations. The Short Track team will join with the rest of Team GB at the holding camp and will be training at the Calgary Olympic Oval. Jon has now started his Olympic blog follow link below:

January 24th 2010 Great Britain wins double bronze. The last day of the 2010 European Championships was another successful day for young Elise Christie, as she took a fantastic second place in the 3000m grand final, leaving her to take 3rd in the overall championship and becoming the first British skater to win an overall European Championship medal since her coach, Joanna Williams took Bronze in 2002. The second medal of the day was won by the men’s relay team (Jon, Tom Iveson , Jack Whelbourne, Anthony Douglas and Paul Worth) in a close fought final, where the guys finished behind Italy and Germany.

January 23rd 2010
Eley takes second in 500m. Jon had took 1st place in every round prior to the 500m final, looking by far the fastest skater in the competition and was heavy favourite to take gold. But as we know in this sport nothing is certain. In the final Jon was knocked over when overtaking to take the lead, leaving him to pick himself up and cross the line in second place. Jon said after the race “It was a bad move by the French skater but he’s out there to win as well. However, I feel I’m skating well and can take a lot of confidence from my performance. It wasn’t about the results here, save them for next month.”
There was more disappointment for the team as Sarah Lindsay was beat in the semi final right at the finish line by only thousands of a second to lose out on a place in the final. The day however did finish on a high note with the Men’s relay team making it through to Sunday’s final, and although the British Ladies relay team missed out on the final they did skate a new national record time in the semi final.
January 22nd 2010
Medal winning start. The European Championships started well for Great Britain as 19 year old Elise Christie won a sliver medal in the ladies 1500m with a tremendous final few laps “I was surprised how much energy I had and how strong I felt at the end of the race. It was an amazing feeling coming over the line in second to win a medal.” Elise talking after the 1500m final.
January 16th 2010
Team heads off to European Championships in fine spirits. Jon and the team fly out to Dresden, Germany on Monday where they are competing in the European Championships from the 22nd to the 24th of January. This will be their last chance to race before heading off to the Olympics in Vancouver. They will be looking to put in a performance that shows the great form they have shown in training. Ahead of travelling away, Jon said: “I’m looking forward to racing in Germany as it will be a great chance to work on the racing skills and a welcome distraction from all the Olympic hype. All the team have been skating really well in training, so everybody is feeling really positive about the Europeans.”

Jack Whelbourne takes Bronze at the Junior World Championships. After being selected for the 2010 GB Olympic Team yesterday, Jack made it two great days in a row by picking up a bronze medal in the 1500m at the Junior World Championships in Chinese Taipei today. This sees Jack follow in the steps of Jon Eley who was the last boy to pick up a Junior World Championship medal back in 2004. If Jack can continue with these excellent performances then Great Britain will hopefully have much to look forward to in the future.

**Jack enjoying the podium**
Elise Christie, GB’s only other representative at the Junior World Championships, narrowly missed out on a place in the girl’s final, giving her a finishing position of 8th in the 1500m. Elise has won a medal in the 500m at a previous Junior World Championships, and with the 500m coming up tomorrow, the team is hoping for another great day and we wish them luck.

Jon Eley is selected for Team GB for 2010 Winter Olympics. Today the British Olympic Association announced at a Press Day the Short Track Speed Skating Team to represent Team GB at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Men’s Team Ladies Team
Jon Eley Sarah Lindsay
Anthony Douglas Elise Christie
Paul Worth
Jack Whelbourne
Tom Iveson
The Men’s Team has qualified a relay team for the first time in twelve years as well as two individual places in all three distances (500m, 1000m and 1500m). The Ladies Team qualified a place in the 1500m and 1000m and two places in the 500m. This will be the largest Short Track Speed Skating Team ever to compete in the Winter Olympics, showing just how well the team has been performing. **Jon Eley being presented to the media**
The Team Press Launch was a great success, with a big turn out from the national press and many school-children were also there to lend the team there support.
Andy Hunt, Team GB Chef de Mission said:
“My congratulations go out to all the athletes selected to represent Team GB in Vancouver. It is particularly pleasing to see that we have qualified the largest number of short track speed skating athletes since the discipline was first included in the Olympic Programme in Albertville 1992, when we also qualified seven athletes. This is testament to the strength in depth that has been developed in GB short track speed skating in recent years.
“I’m very confident that the athletes we’ve selected will strive to give their absolute best for Team GB and push themselves to the limit in the quest for Olympic success. The British Olympic Association will do absolutely everything we can to ensure these athletes – and all of the members of Team GB – can reach their full potential at the Vancouver Games.”
Double Team GB Olympian, Jon Eley said:
“It’s a brilliant feeling and a great honour for me to be selected to represent Team GB. I’ve never made any secret of the fact that, in my mind, taking part in the Olympic Winter Games is the greatest challenge in our sport. I’ve remembered a lot of lessons from competing in Turin nearly four years ago and I’m looking forward to improving on the fifth place I earned out there. I’m very much looking forward to being in Vancouver - being an Olympian is an extremely special feeling.”
Sadly for the team, Jon’s best friend and team-mate Paul Stanley was unavailable for selection for the Olympics due to injury. He is wished all the best in his continued recovery. However with the team’s strength in depth they remain extremely confident of achieving their goals even with this big loss.

A very mixed day for the team. As the men’s relay skated to a sixth place for the second week in a row, one of their most talented and experienced skaters Paul Stanley was on his way to hospital with a badly broken arm. The injury occurred in the on ice warm up before the semi final. To read more on what happened today and this weekend click on the link

Paul will be staying in Marquette for an extra few days and will be having an operation on his arm tomorrow morning. Joneley.net would like to wish Paul the very best and a speedy recovery.
November 14th 2009
Bad day at the office. It was a first round knock out for Jon as he finishes in fourth place in his heat. With a poor start Jon was up against it from the off and was unable to make an overtake to improve his positioning. This left Jon finishing 19th in this World Cup and with a new world ranking of 18. “It was a disappointing day for me. I had a bad start and ending up fighting for position with the German skater which left me at the back of the race and at this level and speed, it’s hard to come back from that.”
November 13th 2009
Men’s Relay team do the business. In what was one of the most nail biting relays the British team had be involved in for many years, the guys took 3rd place in a national record time (6mins.46.31secs) putting them through to Sunday’s semi finals. The quarter final was a real tense affair for everyone supporting the Great Britain team, they were in 4th place for 44 and a half laps of the 45lap race, making mistake after mistake. The guys fought till the end and an excellent overtake by Jon on the final turn put the team through. Great Job Team!!!
November 12th 2009
Jon progresses through to Saturday’s heats of the 500m. It was a long day at Marquette’s Berry Centre that saw nearly 10 hours of racing. From all the GB team racing today only Jon, Elise and Sarah qualified for the heats of the 500m, although there was still some good result from other members of the team. In the 1500m Anthony finished 22nd and Elise finished 28th.
November 11th 2009
Tomorrow see the fourth and final World Cup of the Short Track season take place at The Berry Centre in Marqette, U.S.A. This World Cup is also the second part of Olympic qualification so should be another great weekend of racing. Jon has a busy competition as he’s competing in the 500m, 1000m and Relay. Tomorrow’s racing will be the Qualifying round of the 1500m in the morning and 500m in the evening.
Good luck GB Short Track Team!!

November 8th 2009 6th Place for the GB Relay Team. After just missing out on the final, the Great Britain men’s relay team had to settle for a place in the B Final. In a very close race that went all the way to the last lap, the team took a well earned 2nd behind Italy and a head of Russia and Germany giving the guys a season best finish of 6th place. “It’s a great result for the boys and now it’s in our hands for Olympic qualification” Paul Stanley speaking after his impressive performance in the relay.
November 7th 2009
Eley takes 7th in the 500m. Jon was back among the worlds best as he makes the 500m World Cup semi final. He was in contention to make the A final until a fall going into the last lap. Jon said “I was disappointed not to make the A final but I was beaten by the eventual gold and silver medallists, which shows that I’m in the mix.”
November 6th 2009
Great Britain men make semi final. Today saw a mixed day for the GB Short Track team. The ladies relay team finished in second place in their quarter final but were disqualified for a clash with the Hungarian team.
Better news for the men team as they qualified through to their first relay semi final of the season.
“I was very nervous before the race, but we went out, took control of the race and put the pressure on the other teams. I’m really chuffed with the result but there’s still work to be done” A happy Anthony Douglas speaking after the relay.
Tomorrow’s racing will be the conclusion of the 500m with Jon and Paul in the men’s event and Sarah and Elise in the ladies event
Action from the Men's relay (provideded by Anna Kemp)
November 5th 2009
A good day for the GB team. In the 500m Jon and team mate Paul Stanley make it through to Saturday’s Heats (top28) and are joined by Sarah Lindsay and Elise Christie in the ladies 500m. In the morning’s 1500m competition the youngest of the team Jack Whelbourne and Charlotte Gilmartin finished with career high finishes of 24th in the Men’s event for Jack and 22nd for Charlotte in the Ladies.
There were more solid results in the Men’s 1500m for Tom Iveson and Anthony Douglas who finished 28th and 29th. “It was tough out there today. With the ice being so bad the races were a real fight but it all worked out ok today. Now it's time to get ready for tomorrow’s relays.” – Jon. Tomorrow will see the early rounds of the 1000m and then the relays in the evening.

There’s a great buzz about the team.” Talking to Jon’s Coach, Nicky Gooch. He said “The secret to these world cups will be about keeping a calm mind, keeping it light hearted and enjoying the competition”

But hopefully with the new updated facilities the Solihull clubs will get a great boost for the rest of their respected seasons.

500m disqualification again for Jon. Jon was disqualified for the second week in a row. He clashed with an American skater on the final bend of a closely fought quarter final. Jon said “It was a good race that went all the way. I got myself into the right place at the start and I was skating well. I just left the door open in the last lap, so I had to take a chance to qualify, which didn’t pay off this time.” The disqualification left Jon finishing down in 18th place.
September 25th 2009
A mixed day for the team. Jon makes it two quarter finals as he qualifies into Sunday’s 1000m’s. The Ladies GB relay team stepped up and qualified through to Sunday’s 3000m relay semi final. But it’s another disappointing day for the GB men’s relay team as they are disqualified for falling inside the track.
September 24th 2009
Eley’s back on track. Today saw Jon qualify though to the quarter finals of the 500m. Jon took first place in his first two rounds and then came second in his heat to put him through to Saturday’s quarter final. GB Team falls out of luck. Both the men’s and ladies Great Britain relay teams fall in the quarter finals. The men’s team qualified conformably through their heat in first place and were looking good in the next round until a clash on a relay change with the Japanese team, with both teams falling over. A very disappointing competition for the men’s relay team as they only managed 9th place and will now need to look for some improvement next week in Korea.
September 17th 2009
Jon gets a disappointing call. Jon crashes out in the 500m heat with a disqualification. Although he crossed the line in first place, Jon was disqualified when passing a skater on the outside with 3 laps to go. Jon said “I was skating well, with good speed and felt it was a clean overtake, so I’m extremely frustrated. But there’s always another day and tomorrow I’ve got the relay to look forward to”. Better news for the team was the solid performances from Tom Iveson and Anthony Douglas who both cruised through to the quarter finals of the Men’s 1500m, which takes place on Saturday. Charlotte Gilmartin and Elise Christe will also be joining them in the quarter finals as they qualified in the Ladies 1500m.

Also congratulations to young Billy Simms who finished in fourth place and doing the Solihull Mohawks very proud. Good job Billy! Although Jon fell in both the 1500m and 500m final, he was still pleased with the weekend. Jon said “it was disappointing to go down in two of the finals but it was great to be back racing after a long pre-season.
